Who said diesel is dead? Not Audi, that's for sure!

The Audi S5 will drop the current turbocharged V6 petrol engine for a 345bhp mild-hybrid V6 diesel engine...

This new powertrain will be introduced to both the Coupe and Sportback Audi S5 model going forward. This same set up shall also be used within the latest Audi S6 and S7 models. It consists of 3.0 litre turbo diesel engine, working in conjunction with a 48V mild-hybrid system producing 516ft of torque between 2500 and 3100rpm.

This all-new diesel hybrid engine is expected to propel the Audi S5 coupe from 0-62mph in 4.8secs, whilst the Sportback model is expected to be only 0.1secs slower from a standing start.

Audi also claims the new set up shall be 19% more fuel efficient than its petrol predecessor, and claims it can achieve 45.56 mpg.

A few things remain, given the S5 shall retain the current and highly impressive eight-speed tiptronic gearbox, along with, of course, the legendary Quattro permanent all-wheel-drive system Audi has become famous for.

The all-new Audi S5 will go on sale in Europe this month (May), with an expected starting price in Germany of €65,300. However, Audi is yet to unveil UK pricing as yet.
